SZ Podcast: Luisa Neubauer on COP 27 and Last Generation – Politics

From this Saturday there will always be “Auf den Punkt” on the weekend. We look at what was important this week, what will be important in the coming week and take the time to talk to interesting personalities.

This week the COP 27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt comes to an end. And not only was climate protection discussed, but also human rights in the host country. Luisa Neubauer from Fridays For Future in Germany was on site in Egypt. She says, “We wouldn’t be here if we said from the start that all is lost!” The main thing is to prevent a “backlash”, meaning that statements that have already been made are softened and fossil energies are given more impetus. “We also rely on this process because it is the only process in the world where the poorest and most affected countries in the world can articulate their demands towards the Global North,” said Neubauer. At the COP 27 this year, for the first time, claims for damages by the countries of the Global South will also be discussed. So how much money should the industrialized countries that cause climate change the most, pay the countries that suffer the most from it.

Neubauer also speaks about the protests of the last generation. One could argue about the methods, according to Neubauer. But she doesn’t want to accept that the blockades distract from the climate crisis: “It’s not the job of activists to talk about climate goals.’ That is the mission of all who depend on the world.”
