Syria: Turkey is about to get closer to Assad – danger for refugees – politics

President Erdoğan wants an alliance with Syria and Russia. It would be a major political turnaround, an upgrade for dictator Assad – and dangerous for millions of Syrians who have fled to Turkey.

The old houses have colorful facades and rickety balconies in the inner-city district of Istanbul where the Syrian journalist lives, who has not dared to go out into the streets for days. Actually, the young man should feel safe, after all this is Istanbul and not Idlib, where he was seriously injured in a Russian military attack five years ago and later put in prison by Islamists. When he was free again, he fled to Turkey. Now he fears Turkey might want to get rid of him, deport him to Syria. Turkey, says the journalist, is “playing with the snake”.
