Swiss glaciers melted heavily in spring despite lots of snow – knowledge

Everything pointed to a good glacier year. There was an unusually large amount of snow on the Swiss glaciers in spring. “To find significantly more snow, you have to go back to the 1970s,” says Matthias Huss, glaciologist at ETH Zurich and head of the Swiss glacier measuring network Glamos. For example, his team measured two to three meter high snow covers in higher zones of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the Findelen Glacier and the Rhone Glacier. Above-average amounts of snow were also recorded in Ticino on the Basòdino glacier or in the Engadine on the Murtèl or Pers.
