A political upheaval is emerging in Thuringia: the AfD is gaining ground. Satisfaction with the state government continues to fall.

The According to a survey by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), AfD in Thuringia currently has 34 percent. That is nine percentage points more than in the last survey around a year ago.

According to the “Thuringia trend” surveyed by Infratest dimap on behalf of MDR, the parties in the current coalition – Left, SPD and Greens – come together to almost the same percentage as the AfD alone.

The CDU is in second place with 21 percent (minus 1 percentage point) – just ahead of the left, for which 20 percent of those surveyed (minus 2) would vote. The other state parliament parties are also losing compared to the last survey. The SPD is currently at ten percent (minus 1). The Greens would just about make it into the state parliament with five percent (minus 2). The FDP would no longer be represented in the state parliament with four percent (minus 1).

No majority for red-red-green

Forming a government would remain difficult with such an election result: Neither Red-Red-Green nor any other coalition currently practiced in Germany would have a majority.

According to the survey, satisfaction with the state government has fallen further. Currently, only 37 percent of those surveyed are satisfied with the government. That’s three percentage points less than a year ago – and according to the information, the worst value that Infratest dimap has ever determined for red-red-green.

Ramelow’s most popular politician

Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow continues to head the list of the most popular politicians. 51 percent of those surveyed are satisfied with the work of the only left-wing head of government – two percentage points less than a year ago. FDP country leader Thomas Kemmerich follows at a clear distance in second place with 21 percent approval (plus 2). Close behind is the AfD state chairman Björn Höcke with 19 percent (plus 3).

When asked about a future governing coalition, 31 percent spoke out in favor of an alliance between the AfD and the CDU. 78 percent of AfD supporters are in favor of such a coalition – and 13 percent of CDU supporters. 27 percent of those surveyed would be in favor of a new edition of Red-Red-Green or a coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP. 26 percent are in favor of an alliance between the left and the CDU, 21 percent a coalition of the CDU, SPD and Greens and 13 percent a four-way alliance of the CDU, SPD, Greens and FDP.

In the 2019 state elections, the left had reached 31 percent, followed by the AfD with 23.4 percent. The CDU got 21.7 percent, the SPD 8.2 percent, the Greens 5.2 and the FDP 5.0. Ramelow leads a red-red-green minority government.
