Surprising exit in Dortmund: Edin Terzic leaves BVB – Sport

Coach Edin Terzic is leaving Borussia Dortmund. The 41-year-old announced himself and the club on Thursday. Previously, the so-called “elephant round” of club bosses with Hans-Joachim Watzke, Sebastian Kehl and Lars Ricken had met at the BVB training ground in Brackel. According to media reports, assistant coach Nuri Sahin is set to take over.

“Dear Borussia fans, even though it hurts me terribly right now, I would like to inform you that I will be leaving BVB today,” said Terzic in a video: “I asked those responsible for a discussion after our final at Wembley because after ten years at BVB, including five years on the coaching team and two and a half years as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines.”

Managing director Watzke thanked the coach for “outstanding work. Edin and I will always be friends.” Terzic had sensationally led BVB to the Champions League final, which they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid despite a strong performance. In the league, however, the results were disappointing: BVB only just qualified for the upcoming season in the premier class, finishing fifth in the table.

Sahin, 35, has a very good reputation as a player at BVB, but he lacks coaching experience at the highest level. His only head coaching position was at Turkish first division club Antalyaspor, from where he came to Dortmund on January 1st of this year to support Terzic together with Sven Bender. The club did not initially confirm whether Sahin would take over the head coaching position.
