The Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. has as part of the DAZN documentary Neymar and the Line of Kings made a surprising statement. In an interview, the PSG attacker said the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be his last.

“I think this will be my last World Cup. I think so because I don’t know whether I still have the strength in my head to continue to deal with football,” said Neymar, who was visibly emotional at these words. Accordingly, he will “give everything to be ready for my country. To realize my greatest dream that I have had since I was a child. I hope I can do it.”

Neymar’s statements are likely to meet with surprise, incomprehension and horror among many Brazilian fans. The superstar is 29 years old, at the World Cup in Qatar he would be 30 and therefore probably in a position to play at the 2026 World Cup. In addition, Neymar’s statements also suggest that he might want to end his entire football career in the foreseeable future – including his involvement with PSG, where he is under contract until 2025.
Neymar is considered to be the great hope of the current generation of Selecao. The world’s largest football nation is hoping for a World Cup title from him so that he can finally be accepted into the select group of the best Brazilian footballers of all time. In its two previous tournaments, however, Brazil only made it into the semi-finals (2014) and quarter-finals (2018).
