Support for flood victims – Mission accomplished – Freising

The volunteers from the Freising THW are all back from the disaster area for the time being. The aid organization Navis will stay in Ahrbrück at least until the end of August to regulate the drinking water supply. This Tuesday, team six set out for Rhineland-Palatinate in the community destroyed by the flood. The commitment is also recognized on the homepage of the long-suffering municipality. “Many, many thanks to this private aid organization, which managed the water supply in a professional and uncomplicated manner,” it says there.

The helpers from the technical relief organization have all been back in Freising since Saturday after a three-week assignment. However, it is possible that they will be requested again, possibly at short notice, according to press spokesman Peter Binner. Because an end of the THW operation in the floodplain is not yet in sight.

One week after a bridge-building team, another 20 men and women moved out under the direction of train driver Marco Eisenmann, this time to Dernau in North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with colleagues from the local sections Munich-West and Dachau, the management position was reorganized and a 24-hour shift operation was introduced, as Binner further reports. All tasks that arose in the operational area were organized from there – “up to the request for hammers and nails”. The Freising train crew coordinated up to 250 THW and fire fighters at peak times.

A second logistics team took on the transport and delivered a wide variety of goods, from timber for supporting and cladding of buildings to hygiene items for daily needs, fuel for the emergency services or drinking water. That was not always easy: Andreas Binner from the Freising Rescue Group reports that the deployment sites could often only be reached via the most adverse road conditions such as water crossings, steep mountain stretches with numerous serpentines, kilometers of detours or with the help of anti-skid chains. The kitchen crew of the Freising THW had their first regional assignment, they helped with the preparation and distribution of packed lunches, breakfast and dinner at the Nürburgring.

On Saturday, a team of nine from the Ahr valley came back to Freising. The emergency supply specialist group there, under the direction of Florian Erler, helped with the completion of another temporary bridge and the disposal of rubbish.

According to Peter Binner, the suffering and destruction they saw, but also the joy and thanks they received, motivates “all of our helpers so strongly that despite all their efforts they would immediately move back to the damaged area”.

The aid organization Navis, based in Moosburg, has meanwhile been able to reconnect two other districts of Ahrbrück directly to the drinking water network. With the help of a fire truck from the German Federal Armed Forces fire brigade, the pipes were initially flushed with 80,000 liters of water. Overall, according to Navis, around 700,000 liters of water were treated and dispensed again last week, despite a few interruptions. In cooperation with the responsible health department, water samples were also taken in order to agree on a controlled official release of the addition of chlorine.

In the past week, Navis chairman Wolfgang Wagner had made himself an idea of the situation. The residents of the affected areas are still dependent on support, he said. “The extent of the catastrophe is still unimaginable and has left me with very emotional memories.” At the end of the month, Navis will then decide together with the operations management of the Ahrbrück community to what extent the operation will continue.
