More and more patients are having to do without important medication or switch to alternative treatments because the medicines they need are not available. Some have been missing for several months, while others can be delivered again quite quickly. DOXYHEXAL® TABS 200 MG is currently affected by this.

Details on the supply shortage of the drug DOXYHEXAL® TABS 200 MG

For the drug from the pharmaceutical company Hexal AG The supply shortage report initially extends until July 31, 2024. It is currently not known whether the drug is particularly relevant for hospitals. The Federal Institute has not suggested an alternative preparation for DOXYHEXAL® TABS 200 MG. Nevertheless, it could prove useful to ask the pharmacy about alternatives. In any case, the following applies: It is strongly advised not to look for alternatives abroad.

There are various reasons for shortages in the supply of medicines: from impurities in the medicines to manufacturers ceasing production. However, the main root of the problem is that for most active ingredients there are only a limited number of manufacturers, many of which have their headquarters in China and India, which are often far away. In the present case, the BfArM states that the reason for the current supply difficulties is “insufficient production capacity” The Federal Institute did not provide any further details.

DOXYHEXAL® TABS 200 MG is a prescription drug that is particularly important because of its active ingredient doxycycline monohydrate.
The medicine is prescribed, for example, for the following diagnoses:

• Enteritis caused by Yersinia enterocolitica
• Cholera, unspecified
• Enteritis caused by Campylobacter
• Plague, unspecified
• Brucellosis, unspecified
• Shigellosis, unspecified
• Melioidosis, unspecified

Availability and outlook

An extension of the validity period in the case of DOXYHEXAL® TABS 200 MG cannot currently be ruled out, as the shortage still exists.

Pharmacies are currently under particular pressure and must respond intelligently to the existing shortages. For some medicines, it is possible to deviate from the standard pack size or to dispense alternatives. Although this seems to be working well at the moment, it is not a sufficient solution to the problems in the long term.
Attempts have been made to limit the problem of drug supply shortages for some time. After the traffic light coalition passed a new law for Germany in July 2023, the European Commission presented a document on tackling the drug shortage in October 2023. The primary goal is to relocate production back to Europe. The question now remains how the implementation of the new regulations will affect the problem.
