Former world champion Mesut Özil is leaving the Turkish first division football club Fenerbahce Istanbul. The contract was terminated by mutual agreement, it said in a brief statement from the club.

We wish Özil every success in his future career. At the beginning of the week, Turkish media had already reported on the termination of the contract. There it was also said that Özil was in talks with the Turkish first division club Medipol Basaksehir.
Basaksehir, in turn, gave the rumors a boost: Shortly after Fenerbahce’s announcement, Basaksehir shared the song “Break your bonds” by singer Tarkan on Twitter and linked Özil in the tweet.
Özil, who joined Fenerbahçe from Arsenal FC in the English Premier League last year, has been excluded from the Fenerbahce squad since March. His contract with the top club actually ran until June 30, 2024. A month ago, the 33-year-old world champion from 2014 emphasized that he wanted to fulfill his contract with Fenerbahce Istanbul despite the suspension.
The reason for the suspension was not made public. In November, club president Ali Koc lamented that the 92-time Germany international needed to finally focus on his work and put his business matters aside.
