D.he Greens in the European Parliament warn the EU Commission against classifying nuclear power as green energy in future climate policy.
“France and the Eastern European countries are about to create a fait accompli in Brussels,” said the Green MEP Sven Giegold to the editorial network Germany. The political pressure is enormous. A corresponding definition in the question of so-called taxonomy – i.e. categorization – is threatened as early as November.
“That would be the worst-case scenario for Europe’s energy transition,” said Giegold. The consequences would quickly be felt in the field of finance: “The result would be a devaluation of all new financial products that should advance the Green Deal in Europe.” Instead, more public and private money will be directed towards new nuclear power plants.
So-called greenwashing at EU level is also threatening gas, said Giegold. “All of this has nothing to do with sustainability.” He demanded that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen should wait to classify nuclear power until the new traffic light coalition had formed in Berlin. This is the only way for Germany to have a chance to stop the new plans.
