Suicide of Lucas, 13 years old: school harassment, college reaction … what the open investigation will have to verify

This Friday, January 13, the public prosecutor of Épinal announced the opening of an investigation following the suicide of Lucas, 13 years old.

Why did Lucas, a 4th grade student at Louis Armand College in Golbey, in the Vosges, end his life on Saturday January 7?

This is what the investigation for “harassment of minors under 15 and school harassment” will have to demonstrate, opened this Friday, January 13 by Frédéric Nahon, the public prosecutor of Épinal.

Checks to be made

For those close to the child who were interviewed, there is little doubt: it was indeed the “mockery and homophobic insults” suffered by Lucas that led him to commit suicide “by hanging” and to “leave a note in a diary explaining his desire to end his life”.

“His sexual orientation was known to everyone,” confirmed the prosecutor on Friday, also specifying the objectives of the upcoming investigation.

The latter will thus have to “confirm the reality of the acts of harassment that Lucas would have suffered and their duration”, but also to highlight “the exact content of the remarks and behavior denounced”.

It will also have to verify the “causal links between these facts and the suicide of the teenager” and take stock of “the various measures which have been taken” by the National Education.

As a reminder, Lucas’s college had been informed of the harassment he was experiencing, but no complaint had been filed by his family.

“Situation taken very seriously”

“The situation was taken very seriously by the establishment, by the head teacher”, indicated Valérie Dautreme, the academic director to our colleagues from France Blue. For us, and I mean at this point, the situation has been resolved: Lucas said afterwards that things had settled down, that he was no longer the object of ridicule.

With his lawyer, the mother of Lucas will soon be received by the prosecutor.

This Friday morning, a heartbreaking letter written by the latter was read on BFMTV.

“Please, really, let me mourn with dignity my son, give me time to find the words and the strength to express myself. I can assure you that the day I am ready, I will not let you go. more, I will dedicate my life to continue the fight of Lucas
