Between literary standards and popularity: Why it is so difficult to publish bestsellers today – and what the Suhrkamp publisher Landgrebe has to say about it after the big break in his company.
The joys and sorrows of publishing are often so close together. 2022 was the year in which the annual financial statements of the Suhrkamp-Verlag stock corporation showed a loss for the first time after good years, as SZ researchers have now been able to see from the commercial register. But it was also the year in which the publisher landed the triple: The Nobel Prize in Literature went to Annie Ernaux, the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade went to Serhij Zhadan (the laudatory speech in the Paulskirche was given by Sasha Marianna Salzmann) and Emine received the Georg Büchner Prize Sevgi Ozdamar. All authors from the Suhrkamp publishing house.
