Chancellery Minister Helge Braun has announced his application to succeed party leader Armin Laschet. Braun will present the reasons for his application to the state party in Hesse tomorrow at a state board meeting, said a spokesman for the Hessian CDU parliamentary group. He is officially nominated by his home district association in Giessen.
The 49-year-old Braun is considered a close confidante of the outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom he has served as Chancellery Minister since March 2018. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2002. Braun studied medicine and played an important role in shaping Merkel’s corona policy.

Members of the Bundestag Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen are other possible candidates for the CDU chairmanship. Röttgen had a press conference announced for tomorrow morning on the subject of “candidacy for the chairmanship of the CDU in Germany”.
