The good news first: The pandemic is a historic kick for populism. Worldwide. That’s according to a meta-study published this week by the Center for the Future of Democracy at the University of Cambridge. Populists like Boris Johnson, Viktor Orbán, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Jair Bolsonaro and even Donald Trump are still bugbears of the present, but their poll numbers are falling. The institute even calls the jolt that changed political sensitivities worldwide during the two years of the pandemic “The Great Reset”, the great new beginning. Except for the title, the scientists argue very soberly with statistics and numbers.
