Strong reactions after the “arson” of the house of the mayor of Saint-Brévin

It was around 5 a.m. when about twenty firefighters intervened. This Wednesday, in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), a fire broke out in two cars before spreading to the facade of a house. According to the fire and rescue service, the flames even reached a room in the house, before being finally extinguished. The material damage is heavy but no casualties are to be deplored. It was passers-by who rang the doorbell to warn the occupants to get out.

The fire sparked strong reactions insofar as the house in question is that of the mayor of the town, Yannick Morez (unlabeled), elected since 2017. The city councilor, who was inside, is the target threats since he supported the installation of a migrant center in Saint-Brévin. He announces that he has filed a complaint for “this arson”, indicating to Ocean Press whom he suspected of having been the target of a “Molotov cocktail”.

“An extremely serious act”

“I am appalled at the violence that struck the first magistrate of the city of Saint-Brévin, destroyed his property, put his life and that of his family in danger and flouted the basic values of our democracy (…)”, reacted the deputy of Loire-Atlantique Yannick Haury (LREM). The association of mayors of Loire-Atlantique speaks of an “extremely serious act, which must be punished severely. »

“Without prejudging the results of the police investigation, the Loire-Atlantique FO departmental union unreservedly condemns the intimidation and threats of which the mayor and his municipal team, elected officials of the Republic, have been victims since the announcement of the transfer of the reception center for asylum seekers to the territory of the municipality”, writes the union for its part.
