Strike today in Munich: Which areas are affected – Munich

Numerous municipal departments and businesses will remain closed this Tuesday – from baths to daycare centers. The Verdi trade union has called on Munich employees in the collective bargaining dispute in the public sector for March 21 for a major strike. “According to the feedback from the companies and administrations so far, this will be the largest strike meeting in recent years,” says Munich’s Verdi managing director Heinrich Birner, assessing the mood among the employees.

Everyone is called to go on strike administrative areas of the city, social and educational servicethe waste management company Munich, several companies of municipal utilitiesincluding the baths, Munich clinic, City Savings Bank, Employment Agency and other positions. The strikes in recent weeks have been clearly felt by the people of Munich: garbage cans have not been emptied, children cannot go to the childcare facilities, buses and trams have stopped.

Because there can be spontaneous strikes, it is not entirely clear which areas will be affected – not even in the municipal daycare centers. The city therefore recommends that parents ask their daycare management directly whether the facility is expected to be open normally or at least partially operational, or whether it will be closed completely. In any case, there are restrictions on the disposal of waste and recyclable materials, as pointed out by the Munich waste management company (AWM). Accordingly, due to the warning strike, all recycling centers, the earthworks in Freimann and the used goods department store in Halle 2 will be closed on Tuesday. The recyclables and the poison mobile do not drive. Bin emptying would also have to be suspended for the most part – the garbage will only be picked up at the next scheduled rotation. Local public transport is not affected by the warning strikes this time because separate wage negotiations are under way and a partial success has already been achieved.

There will be a strike at Munich Airport on Thursday

Also the Munich Airport should be struck again: Am Thursday March 23rd, Verdi plans that employees there stop work for six hours. According to the union, the strike will start at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. “It is urgently necessary to increase income at the airport in order to attract colleagues to work at the airport. Otherwise we are threatened with flight chaos this summer as we did last year,” said Manuela Dietz from Verdi Bayern on Monday . She asked passengers for their understanding, they would have to expect longer waiting times. However, the union said that flight cancellations are not expected.

Verdi wants to push through 10.5 percent more wages for the 2.5 million federal and local employees nationwide, but at least 500 euros more per month. Employers are gradually offering five percent more for a two-year term and a one-off payment of 2,500 euros. A mockery, says Verdi Managing Director, birr, in view of the high inflation rate. “Many in the lower income brackets really don’t know where they can still save,” he says.

In expensive Munich, employees suffered particularly badly from inflation, which is making food, energy and rent more and more expensive. In addition, there is a high workload, since thousands of positions are now vacant. The state capital alone lacked more than 4,000 employees. The strikers gather at eleven o’clock on the Marienplatz for the rally.

The next negotiations will take place in Potsdam from March 27th to 29th.
