Status: 01/30/2022 3:41 p.m

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) lifted the storm surge warning for the German North Sea coast on Sunday afternoon. The Hamburg fish market had previously been flooded for the second time within a few hours.

Hundreds of onlookers watched the spectacle in the morning and at noon on the Elbe and at the fish market. Police and firefighters warned people to keep their cars parked at the fish market safe and to secure buildings near the Elbe. Individual streets were closed to prevent vehicles from driving to threatened locations. The interior authority set up a crisis team. The water level at the St. Pauli gauge rose to 2.60 meters above the mean high water level at midday. It was the second severe storm surge in just one weekend in Hamburg.

Damaged Cars

It is the second storm surge within 24 hours. On the night of Sunday, the storm surge had reached 5.20 meters above normal high water. The fish market was already flooded by the storm tide at this point. Several cars were damaged by the flooding. Hurricane low “Nadia” brought hurricane-like gusts to northern Germany – according to the German Weather Service with speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour.

The fire brigade had to go on numerous missions

The Hamburg police moved out about 300 times because of the storm. The fire brigade had to go out to 450 storm operations to clear away fallen trees, among other things. At times, the Hamburg fire department received 320 calls per hour. In addition to the professional fire brigade, 60 volunteer fire brigades and four platoons from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief were also deployed.

Disabilities at HVV and Deutsche Bahn

Also in the HVV there were restrictions on the lines U3, S21 and S3 on Saturday evening due to storm damage. Sections in Bergedorf and Hausbruch were affected. Due to storm damage, long-distance Deutsche Bahn trains in northern Germany were also canceled and delayed. At the Teufelsbrück pier, the fire brigade was able to help close a defective flood protection gate before the tide had reached its peak.

Barge gets stuck under the bridge

On Saturday evening at 9:29 p.m., a dredger ship wrecked and wedged itself under the Elbe bridges. According to the police, two people escaped unharmed. As a result of the accident, the Freihafenbrücke, the Neue Elbbrücke and the railway bridges had to be temporarily closed – with the corresponding hindrances to traffic. At 3:30 a.m. the operation was over. The ship was towed free by the fireboat “Branddirektor Westphal” and brought to the Kirchenpauerkai. Later it turned out that the accident was not due to the storm, but to alcohol. According to the police, the skipper and his crew member had 1.4 per thousand alcohol in their blood.
