Status: 02.12.2021 8:31 a.m.

Heavy gusts of wind tore off branches and uprooted trees in many places in northern Germany during the night. In Wesendorf, Lower Saxony, a tree killed a driver.

The last thing that was lifted in the morning was the storm warning for the Baltic coast. In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, storm “Daniel” led to numerous deployments by the fire brigade and police. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, snow also ensured smooth roads.

Fallen trees like here in Lägerdorf caused hundreds of fire brigades in Schleswig-Holstein.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the control centers counted around 250 operations in the evening and at night. Branches and whole trees fell on houses and streets. Especially in the south of the country, the fire brigade and police had to move out due to the weather. There were therefore no injuries. On the A1 between Bad Oldesloe (Stormarn district) and the Bargteheide motorway junction, the vehicle still has to be recovered after a truck accident. Due to the strong wind, this was not possible on Wednesday evening. The recovery will be postponed to the morning, it said. Nobody was injured in the accident.

Hamburg: Cathedral ended earlier

In Hamburg the strong gusts of wind led to around 200 fire brigade operations. Among other things, according to NDR 90.3 trees fell on the tracks, so that the train traffic on the lines U3, U1 and S3 was interrupted. Due to the strong wind, visitors to the cathedral were also sent home earlier. Several streets were flooded, branches fell on sidewalks and power lines. In addition, the fish market was under water. Nobody got hurt.

In Ludwigslust, the storm partially collapsed scaffolding.

The storm also caused some damage in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At least 150 trees fell, as NDR 1 Radio MV reported. In Minzow near Röbel a tree fell on a fire engine during an operation. In Ludwiglust, scaffolding partially collapsed. There was also snow and slippery terrain in the northeast. Dozens of cars came off the road as a result, especially in West Mecklenburg and around Rostock. There were no injuries.

Ferry traffic was restricted – today again according to plan

In East Frisia, some ferry connections were canceled due to the storm on Wednesday – for example on the lines from the mainland to Norderney, Baltrum and Langeoog. The smaller express ferries also had to stay in the ports.

The ferry of the shipping company Cassen Eils has not stopped at Heligoland since Tuesday, but today it says it is back on schedule. The ferries to and from Amrum and Föhr also run without restrictions, as reported by the Wyker steamship shipping company.
