Storm front reaches Bavaria – DWD warns of storms – Bavaria

A storm front reached Bavaria on Saturday: In the Allgäu it thundered and thundered in the morning. There were hardly any weather-related emergency calls, said a police spokesman. The officers were alerted, for example, about a lightning strike in an open area. The showers and thunderstorms moved on to Upper Bavaria in the morning.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of severe thunderstorms in the regions south of Munich on Saturday. According to the meteorologists, the showers will move out of the Alps towards the Alpine foothills from late afternoon. The risk of thunderstorms increases in the evening. Heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter is possible in a short time, said a DWD meteorologist on Saturday. Heavy gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour can be expected locally. Trees can tip over. Hail is also possible.

The DWD assumes thousands of lightning bolts on Saturday. That is not uncommon in the summer months, but the intensity of the thunderstorm cells is unusual, said the meteorologist. These bring a lot of water with them. If the cells were to discharge over Lake Starnberg, little would happen except that the water level rose. However, if the heavy rain falls in the mountains or on rivers, basements could also fill up during the day.

Temperatures of almost 30 degrees are also announced for Saturday. The north of Bavaria is also likely to be affected, especially on Sunday in the area of the Main, as the DWD announced.

In the night of Sunday it should continue to thunderstorm and rain heavily. In some regions it cools down to 14 degrees at night. In the course of the day, however, it could be up to 28 degrees again on Sunday. The DWD then also expects a lot of clouds.

According to the DWD, the reason for the weather situation is a low over Brittany, through which warm, humid and unstable stratified air reaches Bavaria from the southwest.

In the district of Berchtesgadener Land, violent storms last weekend caused landslides and floods in some places in the popular holiday region around Watzmann and Königssee. The damage runs into the millions. As early as July 9th, heavy rain had caused rivers and streams to overflow in large parts of Franconia and overwhelmed the sewer system.
