The highest warning level was declared in some parts. Many people had to leave their homes. – Days of rain caused dramatic damage in China.

Due to Floods following heavy rains have led to around 36,000 people being evacuated in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian. This was announced by the local flood control office, as reported by the official news agency Xinhua. Heavy rains lasting several days have caused devastating damage in many parts of Fujian, which is why the emergency measures were ordered. 179,800 people were affected by the rains. The floods also damaged 12,350 hectares of crops, causing a direct economic loss of 1.61 billion yuan (225 million US dollars).

From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, some hydrological stations reported water levels of up to 3.65 meters above the warning level in eleven rivers in the province. Water levels remained above this level at seven stations until Sunday morning.

More rain expected

China’s authorities are warning of further heavy rainfall in several regions. According to the National Meteorological Center, parts of the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guangdong are expected to be hit by heavy rainfall or storms on Monday. There could be intense rainfall with a maximum hourly rainfall of more than 70 millimeters, accompanied by thunderstorms or storms, according to the center.

The Ministry of Water Resources and the Meteorological Bureau issued an orange warning. Flash floods are expected to hit parts of the regions mentioned. Some areas in southwestern Zhejiang and northern Fujian were even issued the highest red warning due to the threat of raging mountain streams. Local governments were asked to take precautionary measures. China has a four-level, color-coded weather warning system, with red being the most serious warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
