This volume of stories begins with a bloody impact, an epiphany of the violence that comes from madness. Jules Leroy, one of those inmates of a psychiatric institution that all these stories are about, stands in the doorway with the carcass of his beloved cat. The cat has eaten a piece of his master’s flesh, and had to die for it; Jules has smashed the animal’s head against the wall.
