The stock markets around the world are in turmoil, perhaps even panicking. After the bad news of the past few days and weeks, the weekend did not bring any relief, on the contrary: the Nikkei index on the Tokyo stock exchange fell by more than twelve percent by the end of trading on Monday morning European time, the largest daily loss there since October 1987 – that “Black Monday” that marked the biggest drop in prices since the Second World War. And other important trading centers in Asia such as Seoul and Taipei also closed with losses of more than eight percent, deep in the red.
