Let’s just get out of here first,” Wolfgang Schäuble says to me, “then we can discuss in peace what we’re going to do tomorrow.” Twenty seconds later he’s lying on the worn, dirty carpet of the “Brauerei Bruder” inn in Oppenau, Baden . Felled by two revolver shots from 36-year-old Dieter K.. Blood runs from Schäuble’s mouth and nose. A woman screams: “My God, he must not die! He can’t die! He has to get through!”
