Those who aren’t worried about the Ukraine war, especially given the escalation this week, need to be concerned. Anyone who dreams that this war must somehow be ended with good will plus diplomacy has every right as a layperson – and the right to get an explanation. As far as this is concerned, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said one successful and one disturbing sentence at the opening of the Evangelical Church Congress. The successful one: “If Russia withdraws its soldiers, then the war will be over – if Ukraine stops defending, then that will be the end of Ukraine.”
