Statistical yearbook 2022: Bavaria by numbers – Bavaria

The Ukraine war and the flight from the country are noticeable in the Bavarian population statistics. Around 13.4 million people currently live in Bavaria, which is almost 175,000 more than at the end of 2021. There has been systematic growth for a long time, but there is actually a small jump compared to the previous year; also with a view to the Corona years, in which the influx to Bavaria was generally subdued. The reason for the population increase is above all the flight movement due to the Ukraine war, said Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) at the presentation of the Statistical Yearbook 2022 for Bavaria.

The almost 132,000 Ukrainian war refugees accounted for almost 70 percent of this year’s migration gains from abroad. The countries of origin Romania and Afghanistan follow a long way behind. The statistics also show that it was mostly women with children who came to the country from Ukraine. The proportion of men among adult refugees from Ukraine is a good third. The balance of immigration and emigration within Germany has given the Free State only 3,800 additional residents this year.

The yearbook of the State Office for Statistics in Fürth, which Herrmann presented with its President Thomas Gößl, measures Bavaria in numbers. The database is largely the statistically completed previous year 2021, for relevant topics it extends into the current year. The more than 700-page compendium is an “important basis for planning and decision-making in state politics,” said Herrmann. And “what you think you perceive in terms of moods is not always the reality”. Gößl referred to the possibility of looking at time series and regionalized data.

According to Herrmann, population growth is resulting in challenges such as the tense housing market, especially in metropolitan areas. In purely mathematical terms, each registered person in Bavaria lives in 49.1 square meters. Unlike in previous years, there has been a decline in the birth rate in 2022, down eight percent. The reasons are still to be analyzed and also the question of whether the trend will remain for the year as a whole, said Herrmann. However, he said when asked, there was often speculation as to what Bayern would “do” while staying at home during the pandemic. This effect, if it existed, has at least disappeared.

Enormous inflation wipes out slight increase in gross wages

“Bayern is coming through the crisis surprisingly well,” Herrmann summed up, looking at the economy. In the first half of the year, gross domestic product in Bavaria increased by 2.9 percent in real terms. In addition, the unemployment rate of all federal states was again the lowest. Other parameters make the minister positive – including certain recovery effects and catching up after corona dents. In the first ten months of 2022, the sales of Bavarian industry showed a significant increase compared to the previous year, by 14.7 percent to 337 billion euros. However, price increases are primarily responsible for the high nominal growth, because the production volume fell somewhat during the period. The data from the state office also shows the enormous inflation – which nullifies the statistically recorded slight increase in gross wages.

Good news, on the other hand, comes from tourism, where the upswing continues after the Corona-related slump. From January to October, the accommodation establishments reported noticeable increases in overnight stays by 51 percent (to 80.5 million) compared to the same period last year. According to Herrmann, it is very gratifying that significantly more foreign tourists are coming again. The cabinet of Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) also received this feedback the day before when they visited the Nuremberg Christmas market.

Some other selected insights into the statistics of the Fürth authorities: Almost half of the vehicle registrations this year were already equipped with alternative drives; so also hybrid. Purely electrically powered cars were able to record the strongest growth. 4.4 million people in Bavaria commute to work. In large cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, the proportion of Singe households is 51 percent. The number of annual naturalizations – the hurdles and regulations for which are currently the subject of dispute between the state government and the federal government – was 23,158, a high. At the universities, 31,597 doctoral students were working on a doctoral thesis, 46.9 percent of whom were women. Medicine and health are most popular with the latter, engineering sciences with male doctoral students.
