In the US state of California, a clear majority of voters voted against the removal of Governor Newsom. A group of Republicans had launched the voting against the Democrats.
The governor of the US state California won a vote on his removal by a large majority. After more than 60 percent of the vote had been counted, the US Democrat Gavin Newsom was ahead with around two-thirds of the vote.
The broadcasters CNN and NBC reported that due to its clear lead, Newsom can be expected to remain the governor of the most populous US state. Because millions of people had voted by postal vote, the majority of the votes could be counted shortly after the polling stations closed at 6 p.m. local time (5 a.m. CEST).
Biden warned of Trump-style governor
Polls before the vote had already shown Newsom a head start. Nevertheless, leading US Democrats, including President Joe Biden, called for people to vote. They had warned of a governor in the style of ex-President Donald Trump in the event of a Republican victory.
Conservative activists initiated the so-called recall. To be voted out, more than half of the voters should have voted “yes”. 46 candidates had applied to succeed Newsom. His main challenger was right-wing radio host Larry Elder, who openly supported Trump.
The 53-year-old Newsom was criticized by the conservative side, among other things, because of his liberal immigration policy and the strict corona regulations.
