Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is the SPD’s top candidate for the Hessian state elections on October 8th. She wanted to keep her post as interior minister as a candidate, she told the “Spiegel”.

There had been speculation about this for days, and now Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser herself has declared that she wants to stand as the SPD’s top candidate in the Hessian state elections on October 8th. “I am the first woman to head the Federal Ministry of the Interior – and I want to be the first female Prime Minister in Hesse. I will run for office,” Faeser told the “Spiegel”.

She wants to remain Minister of the Interior until the election. “In a democracy, I think it goes without saying that you can run for elections from an office. After all, that’s what the prime ministers who are standing for election this year, including those of the CDU and CSU in Bavaria and Hesse,” said fibers.

“I was already the leader of the opposition”

In the event of an election defeat, she does not want to go into the opposition, but rather continue to work as Federal Minister of the Interior in Berlin. “I’m applying to the Hessians for the office of prime minister. I want to shape things, I want to take responsibility. I’ve already been the leader of the opposition,” said Faeser. “If the voters decide otherwise, I will continue to fulfill my responsibility as Federal Minister of the Interior,” said Faeser.

In the interview, Faeser described both tasks – Prime Minister of Hesse and Federal Minister of the Interior – as “matters of the heart”. The SPD politician denied the question of whether it was already clear when she took office as Federal Minister of the Interior that she would run for office in Hesse – and whether the post in the federal cabinet was just a stepping stone. “Olaf Scholz met me as a domestic politician when he was Interior Senator in Hamburg himself. In domestic politics, we tick very similarly,” said the 52-year-old.
