State Association for Bird Protection has a new name – Bavaria

The State Association for Bird Protection (LBV) has a new name in the future – State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation. This was decided by the delegates at their meeting on Saturday in Amberg. There was no change in the management of the association: Norbert Schäffer remains chairman. “Bird protection will always remain an important core task of our activities, but the use of the LBV can be seen in all areas of nature conservation,” Schäffer explained the name extension according to the announcement. “The new long version of our name finally encompasses our fascination with birds and nature and shows at a glance who LBV is and what we do.”

With this addition, the LBV takes into account a development that the former chairman Ludwig Sothmann had already initiated at the end of the 1970s. At that time, he also aligned the association’s additional focus on general species and biotope protection. The LBV will continue to work together with other actors to “develop solutions for the big twin crisis of climate change and species extinction,” said Schäffer. The use of the LBV for an intact nature is particularly important now that some are trying to push back nature conservation under the pretext of the effects of the Ukraine war.

Bavaria’s Minister of the Environment Thorsten Faithr (free voters) described the LBV as an important “initiator, motor and a central contact point for nature conservation and environmental education in the Free State”. According to the LBV, it maintains 3,300 hectares of its own protected areas in Bavaria and operates eleven state-approved environmental stations. The federal state has 4,000 volunteers.
