Status: 04/17/2023 3:12 p.m

The police are increasingly taking action against speeders on the streets in several federal states this week. The increased number of speed checks is part of the Europe-wide “Speedmarathon” traffic campaign that started today.

Drivers in Germany will have to be prepared for increased speed controls in the coming days. Because today the Europe-wide traffic campaign “Speedmarathon” started, as the European traffic police network “Roadpol” announced.

In Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, the police want to pull more speed offenders out of traffic for several days. Other federal states such as Bavaria and Hesse have only announced a “speed camera marathon” for Friday.

In some cases, the checkpoints should be announced in advance. Flashes should be used especially in front of schools, daycare centers, retirement homes and at accident black spots.

Action takes place for the tenth time

“Grass is an expression of reckless and selfish behavior on the road and costs human lives,” said Saxony-Anhalt’s Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) in advance. Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said: “Too high and unadapted speed was the cause of more than a quarter of all fatal traffic accidents in Bavaria in 2022.”

According to the traffic police network, the action is taking place for the tenth time. In Bavaria alone, around 2,000 police officers and employees from municipalities and special-purpose associations are said to be on duty. So far, not all federal states have said whether they are taking part in the campaign.
