The tournament victory at the start of the Premier League in Belfast should not be the end for the Englishman, nicknamed “Hollywood”. “I got a taste for it, and I love it. I want to be on top all the time,” Dobey said. Late on Thursday evening he defeated Scotsman Peter Wright (6:3), compatriot Nathan Aspinall (6:4) and Dutchman Michael van Gerwen (6:5).

Confidence to the sky

“I’m living my dream,” said Dobey, 32. He is only 21st in the world rankings, which is why his wildcard for the highly endowed darts league was criticized. Joe Cullen and Luke Humphries, who were not taken into account, had complained because they were passed over as last year’s finalist and fifth in the world rankings. “I know what I’m capable of. My confidence is sky high right now,” said Dobey.

The Premier League is played over 17 weeks, on Thursday evenings. The next station will be in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, in a week. It’s Berlin’s turn on March 30th, the big final evening after 16 individual tournaments takes place in London on May 25th.
