As of today, the nine-euro ticket can be purchased from Deutsche Bahn and transport associations. Where is it available, what about children – and which trains can travelers travel on? What you need to know about the ticket.
How did the launch of the nine-euro ticket go so far?
According to a company spokesman, around 50,000 tickets were sold in the early hours of Monday morning alone. In the morning, the site was repeatedly overloaded due to high demand.
In Hamburg, where the HVV had already started online sales on Friday, 56,000 nine-euro tickets were ordered in the first 24 hours after the start of sales via the app and the online shop of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund – this was reported by “Bild am Sonntag “.
Why is there a ticket?
The federal government wants to cushion the increased energy costs with the nine-euro ticket. At the same time, the ticket should also bring more people to the train.
The ticket is said to be valid for one month and is offered from June to August. The federal government finances the low ticket price with 2.5 billion euros, but the states and municipalities have to organize the implementation independently.
Where is the ticket?
As of today, the tickets can be booked via the DB Navigator app and all other digital rail channels. They are also available from around 5,500 Deutsche Bahn ticket machines and more than 400 DB travel centers in train stations. It is non-transferrable.
The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) is currently working with the associations and companies on a common, uniform app, through which the ticket should also be available. It is still unclear when the ticket app will be ready. However, it should be available for download before June 1, according to the VDV. In some regions, the ticket has been on sale for a few days.
The special tickets are valid in June, July and August. Sliding four-week periods, for example from mid-July to mid-August, are not possible. The price of nine euros applies per month. The tickets can also be bought for all three months in one fell swoop, as Deutsche Bahn says.
Which trains can be used?
Holders can use it to travel nationwide on all buses, trams, subways, suburban trains and local and regional trains – regardless of whether they are operated by Deutsche Bahn or other providers. The ticket is only valid for second class. Long-distance transport with ICE, Intercity and Eurocity, the green Flix trains and long-distance buses cannot be used. Reservation options are usually only available for long-distance transport – and the nine-euro ticket is not valid there.
What about those who already have a subscription?
Anyone who already has a monthly or annual subscription should only be charged nine euros in the three months. The subscribers are informed by their provider or the transport association how the billing looks like: by reducing the direct debit or by refunding the difference. Such rules should also apply to semester or job tickets. There is no Bahncard discount on the nine euros.
Is the ticket also valid for holders of job, semester or social tickets?
Yes. According to the VDV, your subscriptions and semester tickets are valid nationwide for the three months. They should also be reimbursed for the difference. In many places, however, it is still unclear in what form and, above all, when the refund will be made. According to the VDV, it could take until the winter semester for the university administration to carry out the respective accounts.
What about kids, bikes and dogs?
In order to be allowed to take bicycles on regional trains, for example, an additional card must be purchased. If subscription holders are allowed to take their bikes with them in their subscription, this benefit will continue to apply “in the respective area of application” from June to August for nine euros a month, as the Ministry of Transport explains.
In the case of children, Deutsche Bahn points out that children under the age of six travel free of charge and do not need a ticket. Six to 14-year-olds need their own ticket, i.e. their own nine-euro ticket.
According to Deutsche Bahn, no nine-euro ticket can be purchased for dogs. However, as usual, they can be taken along in accordance with the regular fare regulations of the respective transport association, possibly with a separate ticket – depending, for example, on how big the dog is. Travelers should inform themselves accordingly. Seat reservations are not provided for the nine-euro ticket.
