The first season is about Seong Gi-hun, played by South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, who finds himself in a desperate situation: he has lost his job and is in debt. He has to live with his mother and regularly steals money from her. He also has a problem with gambling and even gambled away the money that was intended for a birthday present from his daughter.
Gi-hun is one of 456 protagonists who are collected in black cars and trapped on an island.
