As in previous years, German rap is one of the most successful genres of music that German listeners have streamed on Spotify in 2021. In contrast, a pop singer prevailed among the top female artists.

Last week, Spotify published the lists of the most streamed musicians of the year on Spotify. Once around the world – and once only broken down for Germany. While the Latin trap singer Bad Bunny dominates in the global context (read more about this here), a German surprisingly asserted itself in the local charts – and outperformed international singers.

No artist in Germany was streamed more often than Lea in 2021. The 29-year-old relegated world stars like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa to the other places. 5th place went to the newcomer Olivia Rodrigo, who had only released her first single in January.

The men’s ranking is firmly in the hands of Deutsch-Rap: First place goes to Hamburg’s Bonez MC, ahead of the two rappers Luciano and Capital Bra, who live in Berlin. In the other places are also hip-hop artists with RAF Camora and Samra.

The dominance of this genre is also reflected in the top 5 songs: The 1st, 4th and 5th positions are occupied by German rap tracks. The most successful in 2021 was “Ohne Dich” by Kasimir1441, badmómzjay and Wildbwoys.

Luciano is ahead of the most successful albums and confirms the triumph of the German rap genre. His album “Aqua” only made it to third place in terms of sales, but in terms of streaming views it outperformed all of the competition – including world stars like Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.

In the most successful podcasts of the year, the usual suspects are again in front: As in previous years, “Mixed Hack” by Felix Lobrecht and Tommi Schmitt and “Fest & Flauschig” by Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz dominate this ranking. “Mixed Hack” is even one of the ten most successful Spotify podcasts in the world.
