Speed camera types in Germany: How many km/h tolerance is deducted

Watch the video: Which types of speed cameras are in use in Germany – and how many km/h tolerance are deducted.

According to Statista, excessive speeds in road traffic were responsible for around 36,700 accidents involving personal injury in 2021. Speed controls are intended to ensure more safety on the road. The police use different techniques for this. There are fixed and mobile systems. The best-known speed cameras are permanently installed radar and laser devices. Today, laser measurement technology is predominantly used. If a road user drives too fast, a photo is taken, usually – but not always – accompanied by a flash. Hence the term Blitzer. Very handy and therefore mobile are laser guns that emit pulses of light and use the reflected light to determine the speed. But there are also contacts in the street, so-called induction loops or piezo sensors, which are triggered by driving over them. The speed of vehicles can also be determined with several light barriers that are set up one behind the other. But there are also video tracking systems in which a police vehicle follows a potential speeder and thus determines his speed. All these measuring techniques have in common a certain inaccuracy. That is why the legislator has introduced a tolerance that is deducted from the measured speed pro forma. For violations of up to 100 km/h, this is 3 kilometers per hour, which is always deducted. At speeds over 100 km/h it is 3 percent. With the video tracking systems mentioned, the tolerance is at least 5 percent.
