The GSG 9 was founded in 1972 in response to the Munich Olympics attack. Since then, the special unit has been deployed more than 2,200 times – mostly without the use of firearms.

GSG 9 celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the special unit of the Federal Police with international guests. The GSG 9 stands for “quality and precision,” said Federal Police President Dieter Romann at the ceremony in Bonn.

She has proven her skills in more than 2200 missions. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) pointed out that the vast majority of these operations had been carried out successfully without the use of firearms.

The GSG 9 is also prepared for new dangerous situations with modern helicopters and new ships, assured Romann. As an example, he named possible attempts at sabotage at the planned new LNG terminals.

The GSG 9 was founded on September 26, 1972 as a reaction to the failed police operation after the assassination of the Israeli team at the Olympic Games in Munich. The Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor also took part in the ceremony in the old plenary hall of the Bundestag. Romann emphasized the close cooperation between the GSG 9 and the Israeli special forces Yamam.
