North Korea has carried out another weapons test, according to the South Korean military. It was already the third this month. The United States had previously imposed sanctions for continued missile launches.

North Korea has fired two short-range missiles, according to the South Korean military. The projectiles flew in an easterly direction, the general staff of the South Korean armed forces said. According to South Korea, this was the third weapons test this month.

The office of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the Japanese Ministry of Defense said they had also registered the weapons test. It could be ballistic missiles. The Japan Coast Guard issued safety briefings and said an object may have already landed. Vessels sailing between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, and in the East China Sea and North Pacific have been urged to exercise caution.

US imposes sanctions on North Korea

Hours earlier, North Korea issued a statement challenging the US government for imposing new sanctions over missile tests this month. North Korea warned of stronger and more concrete measures should Washington stick to its “confrontational stance”.

The US government had imposed sanctions on five North Korean government officials. The US Treasury Department said it would fine officials for their role in procuring equipment and technology for North Korea’s missile programs. The United States is responding to six missile tests conducted by North Korea since September.

In addition, the State Department imposed sanctions on another North Korean man, a Russian man and a Russian company for their broader support of North Korean WMD-related activities. The assets of the persons concerned in the USA or under American control are thereby blocked.
