Lady Diana is said to have been particularly fond of the deep violet dress made of velvet and silk. It was designed by the British designer Victor Gemstone.

Diana wore the strapless ball gown with a tulip skirt several times over a decade, including for a 1991 royal portrait taken by Lord Snowdon, then husband of her aunt-in-law Princess Margaret.

The dress, which has three rhinestone buttons on the back, was also featured in Diana’s iconic 1997 Vanity Fair photo shoot with famed fashion photographer Mario Testino. The photos were taken just a few months before her death.

The auction house Sotheby’s estimated the value of the dress at around 113,000 euros. Now the auction in New York brought fivefold.
