Googling, streaming, digging for cryptocurrencies: digitization consumes a lot of electricity. Data centers are the main energy guzzlers, of which more and more are being built, and which have to be constantly cooled down when they are not in the Arctic Circle. But not only that: eight to ten percent of the global electricity consumption is currently used for the manufacture and operation of digital devices, by 2025 it could even be 20 percent. In view of such numbers, some people are already talking about “digitization shame” in analogy to flight shame – if the industry does not rethink about more sustainability.
