Some see the great opportunities of AI, others the risks. The British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is therefore inviting to a meeting of experts in London.

In view of the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Great Britain is planning a summit meeting on the opportunities and risks of the technology. “AI has incredible potential to change our lives for the better. But we must ensure that it is developed and used in a safe way,” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. “No country can do this alone.” Britain wants to lead the way with its expertise, Sunak said. He also wanted to talk about artificial intelligence at his meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday.

Sunak’s technology advisor Matt Clifford recently warned of deadly dangers from AI. Leading experts also stressed that artificial intelligence is a potential threat to humanity and must be given a global priority alongside other risks of societal proportions such as pandemics and nuclear war. However, an expert from the University of Oxford described this warning as a “PR campaign”. The chatbot ChatGPT, which can formulate sentences at human level, had triggered a new hype about artificial intelligence in the past few months.

The summit should take place in autumn, the British government statement said. It should be discussed how risks can be reduced with the help of internationally coordinated measures. The meeting should also serve as a platform on which states can work together. The USA and the EU are already discussing a voluntary AI code of conduct – because of Brexit, Great Britain is left out in the format. According to London, the exit from the EU allows a faster reaction to the rapidly changing technology. According to the government, AI contributes around £3.7 billion (€4.3 billion) to the UK economy and employs around 50,000 people across the country.
