Gianni Infantino probably gambled away. On Monday, the Fifa president drummed again – in front of a virtually assembled 211 national associations – for his idea of holding the soccer World Cup every two years in the future. As if that were still the topic that drives the world’s greatest sport. Infantino did not mention the fact that a kind of second World Cup is actually already being planned in addition to his Fifa tournament: an expanded Nations League. From 2024 onwards, only the national teams of those two continental associations that have previously divided all World Cup titles will compete in this: Europe’s soccer union Uefa and the South American association Conmebol. In March both associations will open a joint office in London. A specialist group is already discussing the details of the new game format.
