Sony’s Playstation 5 is nearing its second product phase, according to some reports. What is currently simmering in the rumor mill.

Since the first leaks about Sony’s further plans for the Playstation 5 became public in April, the network has been speculating about the technical details, release dates and prices of the upcoming PS5 devices. What Sony’s plans for the future look like.

In the past, Sony has repeatedly released updated Slim and Pro versions for its current generation of consoles. This is exactly what should happen with the current, fifth generation of the Playstation: According to internal leaks, about which the Industry portal “Insider Gaming” As already reported in September, a new version of the PS5 is to be released for the coming Christmas business, in which the Blu-ray drive can be removed and, if necessary, supplied with power via a USB-C connection.

According to reports, this PS5 version will appear with the almost identical hardware as the regular PS5 – and probably at a similar price. Sony’s recommended retail price (RRP) for a PS5 with drive in Germany is currently around 550 euros, the Digital Edition (completely without optical drive) currently costs just under 450 euros.

PlayStation 5 Pro? Christmas 2024 could be the time

A PlayStation 5 Pro is also being planned, but according to rumors it could only come onto the market for Christmas 2024. This would give Sony a year more time than in the PS4 days, when the Pro update appeared three years after the release of the PS4 – and at the same price as the original PS4. However, what Sony would focus on in terms of hardware for a PS5 Pro is open. The console can already display games in 4K resolution with up to 120 Hz and leaves nothing to be desired in terms of graphics quality.

However, Sony has so far owed its fans working 8K gaming, which the Japanese tech group used to advertise the release of the console. It is therefore quite conceivable that one would like to concentrate on this high-end segment with the Playstation 5, after all Sony also sells the matching televisions. Because these are not yet so widespread among customers, it should be easy to take some time with the release of a Pro version.

Sony is apparently working on a Vita successor

In addition, it was announced in April that Sony is apparently working on a new handheld, which is currently supposed to be called the “Q Lite” project. PS5 Insider According to Tom Henderson it is visually a device comparable to a PS5 controller, which has a high-resolution 8-inch display in the middle. It should support Remote Play, but largely do without standalone titles – unlike the PS Vita, which was never really able to assert itself despite its own title. In order to be able to use Remote Play as Sony envisages, a constant Internet connection would be necessary in the future – in contrast to the Vita – which is acknowledged with criticism in the rumor mill.

A possibly suitable release date would be together with the planned “Project Nomad” and “Project Voyager”: These are newly developed, wireless in-ear headphones and a gaming headset. It is currently rumored that the two new products will come onto the market in spring 2024, but nothing is known about their prices so far. That’s a bit different with Q Lite: With a portable device, Sony would compete with Nintendo’s Switch and Valve’s Steamdeck, which in its cheapest version is currently the most expensive handheld at around 420 euros – so Q Lite shouldn’t be much more expensive to be competitive. “Project Leonardo” has been officially announced – this is a barrier-free system for people with disabilities, which is still waiting for a fixed release date and price.
