Mikaela Shiffrin’s record show continues. With the 87th World Cup victory, she set the next record. Lena Dürr was sixth in Åre.
Mikaela Shiffrin continued her outstanding record season at the World Cup in Åre, Sweden and left the next entry in the history books. Exactly twelve years to the day after her World Cup debut, the 27-year-old overtook Swede Ingemar Stenmark with 87 World Cup successes and became the sole record holder. In addition, the discipline ball in the slalom and giant slalom is already safe and the overall World Cup is a safe bet.
Shiffrin beamed at the historic success and was also happy that her family was able to witness the success. “It’s doubly special,” she said in an ORF interview. “I’m very grateful.” And the journey is not over yet, announced the new record holder.
Shiffrin focuses despite record pressure
After all the records she had set, Shiffrin left no doubt that she would be back on the podium as the winner at the end of the season. The technology specialist curved elegantly through the poles and put on two cream runs. “After the fantastic day yesterday”, she didn’t feel any pressure today, Shiffrin said after the first run.
With a fine blade, the exceptional driver kept her competitors at bay. The Swiss Wendy Holdener celebrated second place behind the American. Local hero Anna Swenn Larrsson made Sweden celebrate.
Dürr fails in the first round
Lena Dürr, on the other hand, did not find the ideal line through the course. In a run that was not entirely free of errors, she was able to prevent the premature end after a reserve, but with 1.62 seconds she was already well behind the outstanding Shiffrin in eighth place. In the end it was still a strong sixth place for the Starnberg (+2.03 sec).
Aicher and Hilzinger in 11th and 20th place
Youngster Emma Aicher initially came in 14th, but moved up to eleventh place in the final. Jessica Hilzinger also went from rank 30 to the top 20. Team colleague Andrea Filser (+3.86) was no longer there in the second race as 38th.
