Sixt rental cars: Sixt will insure cars in the future according to use – economy

Rental location, rental period, risk of damage: So far, every Sixt car has the same insurance. That is about to change, and customers should also benefit from it.

Rental cars that have not found any customers and are therefore in the multi-storey car park actually do not need insurance for that day. For those who are on the street, the risk in turn depends heavily on the type of use, the rental period and other criteria. With the help of precise data about the cars and their use, the Munich car rental company Sixt and the Düsseldorf insurer Ergo are now testing a new car insurance for rental cars – which is tailored precisely to the vehicle. Munich Re subsidiary Ergo now insures 10,000 of the nearly 60,000 Sixt vehicles in Germany.

“We know whether a vehicle is rented under a subscription or just for a trip,” said Karsten Crede, who is responsible for cooperation with car manufacturers and rental companies at Ergo and was once the head of VW insurance. According to Crede, other important questions for the tailor-made insurance are: “On which day of the week is the vehicle rented? Do the pick-up and return locations differ? How long has the vehicle been on the road? What damage has there already been?”

Ergo determines the individual risk of the vehicles

From the answers, Ergo calculates the individual risk of the vehicle. “It will then be much more tailored than before,” says Crede. “We can always make adjustments, and the whole model keeps getting smarter.” Personal data is not collected, he stressed. Ergo also does not measure driving behavior when working with Sixt, unlike with telematics tariffs.

If the model goes well, Sixt brings noticeable savings. The company could also pass this on to customers and thus exploit a competitive advantage. Karsten Crede believes that new forms of mobility also require new insurance options. Last week he signed a contract with the Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio, which only offers its cars in Germany as a subscription model. Ergo assures you. The insurance company also has partnerships with BMW, Volvo and Great Wall Motors.
