Silvio Berlusconi, suffering from leukemia, hospitalized for check-ups

Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, treated for leukemia, was hospitalized in Milan on Friday for planned checks, his doctors said on Friday. The 86-year-old billionaire “is currently hospitalized at San Raffaele for planned examinations” and related to his leukemia, said doctors Alberto Zangrillo and Fabio Ciceri in a press release.

“These controls were already planned, they were simply anticipated by a few days”, reassured Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and number two of his party Forza Italia, quoted by the Askanews agency. Silvio Berlusconi left San Raffaele Hospital on May 19 after spending 45 days there.

Berlusconi released from long-term hospitalization

He had been admitted there to treat a state of weakness linked to a lung infection but his doctors had revealed that he suffered from chronic leukaemia. Nicknamed “the immortal” for his longevity in politics and one of the richest men on the peninsula with a fortune valued by Forbes at 6.4 billion euros, Silvio Berlusconi has been hospitalized several times in recent years.

In January 2022, he had stayed at the San Raffaele to treat a urinary tract infection. The previous April, he had also been hospitalized for more than three weeks for “Covid-19 sequelae” which he had contracted in September 2020.

He had undergone major open-heart surgery in 2016, then an operation to treat an intestinal obstruction in the spring of 2019. In 1997, he had been operated on for a malignant tumor in the prostate.
