After the shots in the New York subway with 23 injuries, a 62-year-old man is now officially wanted as a suspect. He had rented a pickup truck, the keys to which had been found at the crime scene.

At the press conference on Tuesday, the police repeatedly emphasized that the 62-year-old man was just a “person of interest”. New York Mayor Eric Adams has now declared him a “suspect” in several radio and television interviews. He will continue to be searched for.

According to investigators in Philadelphia, the man had rented a pickup truck, the key to which was found in the suspect’s backpack. The police secured the van eight kilometers from the scene of the crime.

YouTube videos also on gun violence

The man, who lives in Philadelphia and Wisconsin, is said to have uploaded dozens of videos dealing with homelessness, politics and gun violence on a YouTube channel with more than 300 subscribers. And apparently also one that addresses New York Mayor Adams directly and in which he talks about psychological problems and suffering emotional violence that “makes you take up arms”.

The police protection for the mayor was then increased.

Pickup truck led to the trail

23 people were injured in the attack on Tuesday morning in a crowded subway in the New York borough of Brooklyn. The perpetrator first detonated two smoke bombs and then fired at least 33 times with a semi-automatic handgun, according to the New York police.

In a panic, people stormed out of the train at a stop. The perpetrator also managed to escape. He left behind the gun, several magazines, a small axe, a backpack with firecrackers, and a container of liquid – presumably gasoline. Also the key to the pickup truck that led investigators to his trail. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
