She almost bled to death: Ashley Judd talks about horror accident in Congo
Ashley Judd broke her leg in Congo last year and had to be rescued from the rainforest. In an interview, the actress reported again about the accident.
A year ago, Ashley Judd died in an accident in the Congolese rainforest while traveling with a research team to observe bonobos. The 53-year-old stumbled over a tree trunk in the dark and fell so badly that her right shin broke four times. By doing US Podcast “Sex, Body & Soul” Judd spoke again about the accident and the subsequent rescue operation.
“I don’t know how the mind, body and soul come together to endure the unbearable. I’ve bitten a stick, I’ve screamed, I’ve cried, I’ve had convulsions. I’ve never passed out – I wish I could would have been like that,” she said. And further: “I knew that I couldn’t have any expectations, like when I would get help or if there would be a painkiller. I just had no expectations and I knew that I could only take one breath at a time .”
Accident in Congo: Ashley Judd lost a lot of blood
After five hours the group was found. Local helpers carried the actress back to her camp in a kind of cloth for an hour and a half. From there she was taken to the nearest larger town on a motorbike, the journey took six hours. Judd was flown to a hospital in South Africa, where she spent nine days.
“When I arrived my leg had no pulse and I was bleeding profusely. If I had been taken to Europe I would have bled to death,” Judd said. This saved her leg and her life. The 53-year-old was finally flown by helicopter to a clinic in the US state of Tennessee for a full recovery.
Despite the traumatic experience, Ashley Judd traveled back to Congo earlier this year. “That’s where I belong. I love it. It feels good,” she said in the podcast interview.
