The Chinese government’s strict zero-Covid strategy repeatedly creates states of emergency. Now Disneyland in Shanghai is closed and numerous guests have to stay in the park – not for the first time.

With the sudden closure of a huge Disney resort, China is once again causing a stir in dealing with the Corona policy. According to several media reports, the resort, which includes hotels, restaurants and a Disneyland, suddenly closed its doors on Monday – even though there were still numerous guests in the park. Videos on the Chinese social media platform Weibo and Twitter show people standing in front of closed gates and unable to leave the park. Numerous people ran to the gates to escape the quarantine, but these were already closed. The department itself confirmed on its website that the park will remain closed from Monday until further notice.

The park made the headlines last year when 30,000 visitors were promptly locked in and had to test themselves freely. It is not known how many visitors are in the park this time. According to a report from “Yahoo“However, 60,000 tourists are said to have stayed in the park at the time it was closed,”Asia Nikkeimeanwhile states 20,000 visitors.

The closure is a reaction to ten new corona cases that were registered in the city of millions on Sunday. China is pursuing a strict zero-tolerance strategy in dealing with the pandemic, with entire cities being locked down in some cases. Images from an Ikea branch and from an Apple supplier recently caused a stir.

Disneyland in Shanghai: Visitors are allowed on rides for free

In mid-August, an Ikea branch in Shanghai was also closed without further ado after a customer had contact with a boy who tested positive. When health officials entered the building, hundreds of customers tried to flee the store, some of them were successful. In Zhengzhou in eastern China, the employees of the Apple supplier Foxconn were summarily locked up in the factory after 69 new corona cases were reported in the city of over a million inhabitants within three days. The plant is considered one of the most important production sites for Apple, several hundred thousand people are employed there. On the Internet, employees complained about unsustainable conditions in the factory, starting with problems with food. On Sunday, several employees managed to escape from the premises.

In order to leave the Disney resort in Shanghai, visitors must now present a negative test. All visitors who have been on the site since last Thursday must also prove three negative tests spread over three days. It is not yet clear when the park will reopen. Corona requirements were tightened in Shanghai just a few days ago. There is at least one advantage for the visitors trapped in the park: they are allowed to use all the rides for free.
