Severe weather: Weather service expects hail and storm

The German Weather Service is predicting severe weather in the west, in the centre and in the evening also in the east. According to meteorologists, supercells could form – these are thunderstorm cells with high energy.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), large hail and gusts of wind in particular could cause damage in Germany this Tuesday. Severe storms are expected in a corridor from the west through the middle to the east – according to the DWD forecast, individual strong thunderstorms are expected to develop from late morning.

“The greatest danger is likely to come from hail, the grains can be several centimeters in size,” said DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid on Tuesday. There could also be heavy gusts of wind. Heavy rain with up to 30 liters per square meter is also expected.

The DWD expects so-called supercells to form locally – thunderstorm cells with high energy, as Schmid said. Where exactly this will be the case cannot be predicted.

The DWD indicated a corridor that stretches from the west across North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and the middle of Germany. In the evening, the area will then reach the east. “It is difficult to identify exact regions,” said Schmid. There will also be regions that will not be affected. According to meteorologists, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out in the west and in the middle. The DWD is predicting heavy rain for the north.
