Severe storms over Bavaria – power outage in Augsburg – Bavaria

Heavy thunderstorms and heavy rain have led to numerous fire and police operations in parts of Bavaria. No one was injured in the storm on Tuesday night, the police announced this morning. There were power outages in Augsburg and a sawmill caught fire in the Mühldorf district. Overall, however, the situation was not dramatic: the operations centers initially reported only minor operations.

Lightning strikes in Augsburg city center caused power outages in parts of the city. According to the fire department, several people got stuck in elevators and had to be rescued. Two substations were also paralyzed by lightning for almost an hour, the police said. The lightning also triggered several fire alarms and set a hedge on fire. The emergency services were also called out because of flooded basements and streets.

There were also several operations in Upper and Lower Bavaria due to flooded cellars and streets. In Straubing, according to a spokesman, the fire department had to rescue an elderly woman from a cellar who had been trapped by water. The woman had tried to close a valve, then apparently fell and was unable to open the cellar door herself because of the water penetrating, said the fire department spokesman. The police, fire department and rescue service finally rescued the woman.

In Gars am Inn (Mühldorf district), a sawmill caught fire late in the evening – presumably as a result of a lightning strike. However, this has yet to be finally clarified by the police. According to initial findings, no one was injured. A police spokesman spoke of damage in the low six-figure range. A nearby railway line was closed while the fire was being extinguished.

In Munich, the fire brigade was called out because of the heavy rain, a fire brigade spokesman announced this morning. During the five to six operations, they were busy dealing with water in the basement and flooded streets. The German Weather Service (DWD) had issued a severe weather warning of level three out of four for Swabia and Upper Bavaria for Monday evening. As a meteorologist from the DWD said this morning, the storm – as expected – brought a lot of heavy rain. In the Alpine foothills, up to 46 litres per square metre fell. There were isolated hailstones, but only relatively small hailstones, such as in Bad Kohlgrub with a diameter of around one centimetre.

Once again, it’s the Italian DJ’s song – and once again xenophobic slogans are said to have been sung along with it. But a video that the Süddeutsche Zeitung has also seen provides some insight.

In the coming days, people in Bavaria should prepare for rainy weather for the most part. After a wet start, the weather will become increasingly pleasant on Tuesday, especially in the southeast, according to the DWD. Rain is expected from the southeast on Wednesday, but it should remain dry on the eastern edge of the Alps until the afternoon. Maximum temperatures will be between 16 and 23 degrees. On Corpus Christi, it will be cloudy throughout the Free State, with increasing numbers of showers and isolated thunderstorms forecast. Friday will be similar: Here too, it will be very cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms.
