Heavy rain, storm and hail – large parts of Germany were hit by severe storms in June. This results in costs of around 1.7 billion euros for insurers. Such violent weather conditions could occur more often in the future.
In the past month, several severe storms swept across large parts of Germany. The damage caused by this could cost German insurers up to 1.7 billion euros. This estimate was published by the German Insurance Association (GDV).
In the second half of June, the severe storms hit southern Germany in particular. In Baden-Wurttemberg heavy hail came down. Some of the grains were as big as tennis balls. After that, the thunderstorms with storms and heavy rains also caused flooding in other areas.
Second largest damage in around 20 years
“It has been shown once again how much damage hail and heavy rain can cause within a very short time,” explained GDV General Manager Jörg Asmussen. The storms caused the second largest damage from hail and heavy rain in about 20 years.
The GDV put the property damage caused by hail on buildings and household items at an estimated 600 million euros. The storm “Andreas” recently caused greater damage from hail, which cost insurers around two billion euros more.
400 million euros in water damage
According to estimates, water damage as a result of the heavy rain amounted to around 400 million euros. The GDV last reported major damage in 2016 after a storm with heavy rain: At that time, the insurers had to replace values amounting to around 480 million euros.
After the most recent storms, there would also be around 700 million euros in costs for car insurers. Around 275,000 vehicles were damaged by hailstorms.
According to his statement, GDV managing director Asmussen expects that such violent weather conditions will occur more often in Germany in the future. The intensity of storms will also increase.
